PART I · NOTES ON THE QUESTION OF EVIL

Alfred Hitchcock · Shadow of a Doubt

The second document turns from Conrad’s imperial darkness to Hitchcock’s domestic daylight. Shadow of a Doubt places violence inside the reassuring forms of family, small-town life, social charm, and ordinary rooms. The sequence begins in Santa Rosa, where the danger is not that evil crosses the threshold, but that the household already knows how to welcome it.

This is a nine-entry sequence. All nine entries are now available. A Poison in the Ordinary is complete.
